The Prevalence of Aphthous Stomatitis and Behcet’s Disease in Tabriz imam reza and sina hospitals staffs
Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of aphthous stomatitis and behcet disease in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences staffs.
Methods and materials: In a cross-sectional study, the staffs of Tabriz imam reza and sina hospitals were investigated using face-to-face interview. Individuals were evaluated for the prevalence, frequency, number and location of aphthous stomatitis. Also the correlation between aphthous stomatitis and family history, smoking, education levels was studied.
Results: In this study, 467 patients (206 males) were studied. The mean and standard deviation of age was 33.53±8.38 years. One hundred fifteen patients (24.6%) had aphthous stomatitis and 82 patients (17.5%) had positive family history. The most prevalent location of aphthous was gingiva followed by lip and buccal mucosa. Also, the frequency of aphthous stomatitis was the most frequent every six months. There was no correlation between aphthous stomatitis characteristics including frequency, location and numbers with gender, education levels, and smoking; but the family history had a significant correlation with aphthous stomatitis characteristics. None of the individuals had behcet disease according to interview and clinical examinations.
