Evaluation of short term outcome probiotics for the treatment of allergic rhinitis

Abstract
Introduction: The high prevalence of allergic rhinitis is a serious problem in the field of modern medicine and public health. The aim of this study was to evaluation of the effect of probiotic on short outcomes in adults with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods and materials: In a randomized clinical trial, patients with AR were divided into two groups. One group received probiotic supplement and other received placebo for four weeks. Before and after intervention clinical signs and symptoms and paraclinical findings were recorded and were compared between groups. Results: A total of 28 patients, including 14 patients in each group were completed the study. The mean age in probiotic group was 34.15 ± 12.08 years and in the placebo group 29.64 ± 12.32 years. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of clinical signs and symptoms including inferior turbinate hypertrophy changes, nasal polyp changes, nasal and post nasal discharge, nasal and throat pruritus, sneezing, coughing, nasal congestion, sleep disorder, night snoring, and open mouth breathing (P Value> 0.5). Also, there was no significant difference between paraclinical findings including chest x-ray, Water’s view radiography, spirometry findings and quality of life between groups (P Value> 0.5).
