Demographic characteristics, clinical and para clinical manifestations, treatment and outcomes of hydatic cystic patients in Emam Raza and Sina Hospital, 2008-2018
Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine demographic characteristics, clinical and paraclinical signs and treatment and outcome in adult patients with hydatid cyst diagnosed at Emam Reza and Sina Hospital during 10 years.
Materials and Methods: The records of all patients with hydatid cyst over a 10-year period were evaluated with regard to epidemiological factors and demographic information, laboratory and radiological findings, and treatment of inpatients. 130 patients were evaluated.
Results: Of the 130 patients studied, 53.3% were male and 47.7% were female. The mean±SD of the age of the patients was 39.01±17.49 years with a median of 34 years. 74.6% of patients were resident in the city. 10.8% of the patients had exposure to livestock, 1.5% had exposure to dogs, and 3.8% had consumed half-cooked meat and liver. The most prevalent underlying disease was hypertension with a frequency of 28.5%. The most common clinical symptoms in patients were general symptoms of fatigue and weakness (76.9%), hepatic (33.8%) and then pulmonary (19.2%). ELISA test results were negative in 22.3% and positive in 77.7%. The most positive imaging cases were CT-Scans with a frequency of 67.7%. The most frequent site of cyst was liver disease with a frequency of 53.8%. The most common type of treatment was surgery with a frequency of 88.5%. Also, 1.2% of patients received medical treatment including albendazole and mebendazole. In the post-treatment outcome study, 113 patients (86.9%) received complete treatment, 6 patients (4.6%) remained untreated, and had side effects including liver transplantation, and 11 patients (8.5%) were treated and treated. Side effects included lung lobectomy and splenectomy.
