Comparison of Modified Radical Mastectomy complications with Breast Conservation Therapy in patients with early stage breast cancer
Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. There are various methods for surgical treatment. The aim of this study was to compare Modified Radical Mastectomy complications with Breast Conservation Therapy in patients with early stage breast cancer.
Materials and Methods: In this study, which is a descriptive cross sectional study and all of the patients with breast cancer who referred to the Imam Reza hospital in Tabriz during 2015-18, that its was 80 patients including 37 patients in MRM group and 43 patients in BCT group were included in the study. Gathering information through analysis of patient records and by telephone (by a physician or thesis researcher) and the information was recorded in a questionnaire.
Results: In this study, the mean (standard deviation) age of the MRM and BCT groups was 50.8 (11.1%) and 46.6 (9.1%) years, respectively. Family history of breast cancer in the two groups of MRM and BCT were 2 (5.4%) and 3 (7%), respectively. The highest frequency in the three groups of tumor size was 2-5 cm which was 28 cases (75.7%) and 31 cases (72.1%) in the MRM and BCT groups, respectively. Also in MRM and BCT groups 1 case (2.7%) and 8 cases (18.6%) were in stage 1 cancer and 36 cases (97.3%) and 35 cases (81.4%) were in stage 2 cancer, respectively. In MRM group, 22 cases (59.5%) and in BCT group, 14 cases (32.6%) had lymph node involvement (N1). The most common type of tumor pathology was Invasive Ductal Carcinoma which was 35 cases (94.6%) and 39 cases (90.7%) in the MRM and BCT groups, respectively. Also in MRM group 1 case Needed ICU Care for 2 days and 1 Case Recived 2 Unit Packed Cell. Duration of hospitalization, surgery and hospitalization cost in MRM group were significantly higher than in BCT group, while satisfaction in BCT group was significantly higher than MRM group. In this study, there was no significant relationship between complications of torpidity and seroma in the two groups of MRM and BCT.
Conclusion: In this study, it seems that method of Breast Conservation Therapy is better than method of Modified Radical Mastectomy in amount of satisfaction and the duration of hospitalization and surgery. It is suggested to conduct a more comprehensive study with considering the other related factors and with a 6-month, one-year, and five-year follow-up and determine the cost of post operative radiotherapy in order to estimates this issue more accurately.
