Abstract
Introduction: Dental treatment of children under general anesthesia plays an important role in their oral health. In some cases the treatment under General Anesthesia should be repeated after first dental treatment. There is no research about the cases of children’s dental treatment under general anesthesia. The goal of this study is evaluation of the factors of children’s dental treatment repetitions under general anesthesia in children under 12 years old. Methods: In this study documents of all of children dental treatment undergoing general anesthesia between 2008-2018 in Tabriz dental faculty hospital and Tabriz city’s dental clinics were studied. Just the documents of children who treated under general anesthesia for the second time or more were analyzed. In order to collect such as the age of the child during the first time under anesthesia treatment, the presences of mental and physical disabilities, the type of treatment, and participate or not participate in follow-up session. Finally, the collected data were analyzed by SPSS17 software. Results: Demographic data in our study showed that 41% of all of children needed retreatment (second anesthesia). Also 39.7 percent of treated patients were physically and mentally disabled and 67.9% of them needed second treatment under GA. In comparison with healthy people there is a statistical significant difference (P<0.05). Our study showed that 62.7% of patients who participated in first follow up didn’t need repetition of dental treatment under general anesthesia. There is a significant difference between cases who participated and who didn’t participate in follow up sessions. The frequency of composite restorations in group which needed retreatment in GA1 was 143 and in second treatment (GA2) was 58 persons. There is a significant difference. Amalgam restorations were done for 102 patients, in GA1 and 127 patients in GA2. There was no significant difference in numbers of patients between GA1 and GA2. In this study, Stainless steel crowns used for patients who needed retreatment under general anesthesia for 46 persons in GA1 and 91 persons in GA2 and showed high level of success of this treatment. Also pulpotomy treatment was done for 71 teeth in GA1 and 42 teeth in GA2 cases . But Pulpectomy treatment was used for 36 teeth in GA1 and 54 teeth in GA2. The difference of two types of pulp treatments is significant between GA1 and GA2(p<0.05). Conclusion: Younger age, the presences of mental and physical disabilities, no referral to follow up and conservative treatments( such as composite restorations or pulpotomy) are important factors for repeated dental treatments under general anaesthesia.
