Explaining the experiences of PhD students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in School of Pharmacy, towards retrieveal and evaluation of information: a Case Study
Abstract
Introduction: By increasing the production and ease of access to
massive information through databases and the web, the skill of
searching and evaluating information for useful and effective use, is
an essential skill for researchers and students.
Objective: The research sought to investigate the viewpoints and
experiences of Ph.D. Students in Tabriz University of Medical
Sciences regarding information seeking and information evaluation.
Method: In this qualitative study, the data was collected through
semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using a content
analysis approach and by using MaxQDA software version 12.
Results: 13 Ph.D. students at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences
participated in this study.
The code obtained from the interviews which relates to the search and
retrieval skills of students, was categorized into two thems "search
tools" and "search strategies". Student problems in search of
information were also identified.
Three themes including “Databases evaluation”, “Information sources
Evaluation” and "content evaluation" were raised as three most
important components of the evaluation from students' viewpoint.
Each of these category includes the criteria and sub criteria that
describe specific aspect of the students criteria in evaluating
information.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, students need more
training to familiarity with the capabilities of search tools for useful
and effective use of them. Also, by identifying the problems of
students seeking information, including access to databases and access
to fulltext articles, the university's central library can address these
problems by providing off campus access to graduate students. The
criteria derived from this study can also be used to train students in
other disciplines.
