Determination of glutamine in athletic glutamine supplements available in Iran Drug market

Abstract
Introduction: Glutamine, as the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue, has positive anti-catabolic role in protein synthesis and strengthens the immune system. Role of glutamine is vital in the body for physiological function. Glutamine supplementation is effective in improving muscle tissue and, in addition to enhancing the immune system's performance, supports the growth and strength of the muscle, so it is used in the form of supplements by athletes. Many supplements containing glutamine that are supplied to improve physiological function or therapeutic purposes may contain substances not included on the supplements label. Some packets of these supplements are made inside the country, and unfortunately, illegal drugs such as stimulants, drugs and hormones are added to enhance the performance of consumers (including athletes). Objective: The development of fast, accurate, precise, and low-cost analytical methods is important for assessing the purity of oral supplements in health assessment purposes. Materials and Methods: In this study, a high-performance liquid chromatography device equipped with a UV detector is used to determination of glutamine. Orthophthaldehyde is used as a derivative to improve glutamine assay. By using the glutamine standard, the method is initiated and optimized and then the amount of glutamine amino acid is measured in different glutamine supplement samples. Results: After plotting the calibration curve by the glutamine standard at sequential concentrations, the amount of glutamine in the unknown samples is measured and expressed as a (% Recovery). Conclusion: this amino acid that preparation and present in Complement form, it plays an important role in increasing cell size and enhancing muscle protein synthesis and has very potent anti-catabolic properties. Therefore, checking its purity is of particular importance.
