Evaluation of the synergistic effect of phage and thymol on the biofilm of enterococcal faecalis bacteria
Abstract
Introduction: Enterococcus faecalis causes many infections in humans and this bacterium is resistant to many treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of phage and thymol on the biofilm of Enterococcus faecalis in vitro.
Methods: In this study, Enterococcus faecalis bacteria were cultured in specific culture media in the presence of different phage, thymol and simultaneous phage and thymol dilutions in 96-well plate for 24 hours. Then bacterial colonies were counted. Man-Whitney test was used for data analysis.
Results: The results of this study showed phage has Antibacterial effect on Enterococcus faecalis and thymol has antibacterial effect on this bacteria too. Also synergism of phage and thymol showed antibacterial effect betted than phage or thymol. phage with thymol at lower concentrations inhibit bacterial growth. However there was no statistic difference.
