The study of rate and reasons of discharge against medical advice in hospitals of Tabriz city, 2011

Introduction:discharge against medical advice (DAMA) is a notable problem that has been associated with increased morbidity and readmission.
Aim: The present study aim to evaluate the prevalence of DAMA and to determine the causing factors for DAMA.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2011 to September 2011 in 17 hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. The profile of all DAMA patients was studied by using a two-part check list concluding demographic factors and DAMA reasons. To analysis of date we use of SPSS software
Results: The overall DAMA rate among hospitals was 6.3%. The highest DAMA rate belonged to teaching hospitals with 7.5% DAMA rate. Younger age, male gender, hospital and ward type and diagnosis, insurance type, and month of hospitalization were associated with DAMA. Most recorded DAMA reasons, was personal problems.
Discussion: In comparison to other studies done in developed countries, relatively DAMA rate is higher.Determine of rate and relevant factor of DAMA can lead to preterm recognition of this patients and implementation of proper intervention.
