Implementation of DOPS test for evaluation of procedural skills of community dentistry lesson and its effects on skills learning and degree of satisfaction of teachers and students at Tabriz dental school 2018-2019
Abstract
Background: Direct Observation of Practical Skills evaluation is a valuable method foe clinical evaluation. The aim of this study was implementation of DOPS test for evaluation of procedural skills of community dentistry lesson and its effects on skills learning and degree of satisfaction of teachers and students at Tabriz dental school in 2019.
Methods: in a intervantional study, 60 dentistry students were selected and then randomly assigned into two groups of case and control. In the case group was evaluated the skills related to Fluorotherapy, fissure sealant therapy and health education by DOPS method. In the control group these skills were evaluated by traditional methods. Finally, the skills in the two groups were checked by checklist and data were analyzed by using SPSS22 software.
Results: independent t-test showed a significant difference in the mean score of Fluorotherapy, PRR and fissure sealant therapy and health education between case and control groups (P < 0.0001). The results also showed a significant increase in these skills in the third stage of assessment in the case group, which showed a statistically significant in ANOVA (P < 0.0001). The satisfaction of professors and students was high considerably on the DOPS test. All participants also had a positive view of the test.
Conclusion: DOPS method had more impact on Fluorotherapy, PRR and fissure sealant therapy and health education and learning process in dentistry students than conventional method. The satisfaction of professors and students was high considerably on learning process in dentistry students. Student-centeredness, objectivity and appropriate feedback are the advantage of the DOPS method.
