Association of Self-efficacy to Asthma Control and Quality of Life in Patients with Asthma referring to Sheikh Al Rais Clinic of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences 2011
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Asthma is one of the chronic respiratory disease resulted in the inflammation, stimulation and spasm of the air ways. This disease is one of the main health problems in most parts of world. A health difficulty is to diagnose and cure asthma. A large number of the infected people die yearly. Despite receiving the proper cures, the recent researches shows the poor control of this disease in %53- 58 of patients. The self-efficient is the confidence of person in her/his abilities to do the proper behaviors in the special situations. The less self-efficient of asthma patients is related to the mal-function of lung and the low quality of life. The raise of the self-efficient and self-care behaviors has been showed as the vital matter in the successful management of asthma. with regard to the rise of the asthmatic patients in Iran and world, the increase of costs resulting from cure, influence of the disease on the life quality of patient and the relation of self-efficient to the control of it, the aim of the research is to determine the relation between self-efficient, the life quality, and the control of asthma in asthmatic patients referred to Sheikh Al Rais Clinic, Tabriz Medical Sciences University.
Method of study: This research is a correlation study which examines the relation between self-efficient, the life quality, and controlling asthma of the infected patient's referred to Sheikh Al Rais clinic of Tabriz Medical Sciences University. The 257 asthmatic patients referred to the clinic were selected as the research sample. Tools of collecting data were questionnaires including social personal ‘asthma quality of life, asthma self-efficacy scale, and control questionnaire as well as spirometer parameters of the patients. The data was collected after determining the validity and reliability of the questionnaires and analyzed by applying the descriptive and analytic statics.
Findings: The results showed that maximum and minimum mean of life quality are related to the perspective of the social (3/4±0/7) and breathlessness aspect (2/7±0/6) respectively. Also maximum and minimum mean are related to the regular use of drugs (4± 0/6) and the relation aspect to physician (2/7±0/7) respectively among the self -efficacy aspects. Maximum and minimum mean are related to the rate of limitation in the activity because of the disease during the past week (3±1/1) and the number of the puffs of spray used during past week (1/5±1/2) respectively. There was a significant statistical relation of self -efficient to the asthma control (p=0/001, r=-0/378) and the self- efficient to the quality of life (p=0/001, r=0/442).
Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that having confidence in the abilities is related with the better life quality and control of asthma to control the symptoms. It is offered that the future researches done on the relation of self-efficacy to the death rate of the infected people and also the factors influencing on the promotion of the patients ‘self -efficacy is examined.
