Effect of Teaching Infection Control Methods on Knowledge and Practice of Tabriz Hemodialysis Nurses in 2015
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Hemodialysis is the most common renal replacement therapy in Iran that has led to some complications, as infection is the most cause of hospitalization of these patients. In this regard, considering the standards of infection control by nurses has particular importance. One the other hand, nurses appropriately training can also lead to learning and behavior change. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of education on knowledge and practice of infection control in nurses on hemodialysis.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, the hemodialysis nurses of Tabriz randomly selected by study's criteria. And the two intervention and control groups were trained with conventional and face to face training with manual booklet. Knowledge and practice of participants using multiple choice questions and a checklist based on the guidance of centers for disease control (CDC) were assessed before and three weeks after the training. So ware SPSS (13) was used for data analysis.
Results: Both method were effective in raising awareness of knowledge of percipients, but the mean differences of knowledge (p=0.68), and overall performance (p=0.89) in the two groups was not statistically significant. Comparison of the performance of drug management, hand hygiene, disinfection before the dialysis, the dialysis unit dipping process, using a catheter connected to the needles, dialysis and lines separation, care of the catheter, needles separation except "care of catheter exit site" showed no significant difference (p=0.01).
Conclusion: There was no significant effect of education on knowledge and practice. But during training can be seen an increase in knowledge and practice scores. By using modern methods of training and spent long periods nurses can be encouraged in order to control infection.
