A Comparison on the Effects of Booklet-Based and CD Education Intervention on QOL of Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Introduction: Patients with chronic renal failure face the lifelong challenges resulting from hemodialysis. Patient education has been shows to be effective on treatment success. The present survey aimed to compose the effect of booklet-based and CD educational intervention on quality of life of hemodialysis patients.
Methods & Materials
This is a clinical trial conducted on 59eligible hemodialysis patients referred to Sina University Hospital in Tabriz. Using random sampling method the participants were assigned to three CD-based education, booklet education and control groups. Data gathering tool was “Kidney Disease Quality of Life- Short form “ (KDQO:-SF), a tool to measure QOL for these patients. Data was analyzed using SPSS/13, descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), t-test, One way, repeated measures, paired t-test, and Chi-square test.
Findings: The participants of all three groups showed no significant difference in demographic characteristics. The results of this survey indicate that patient education using booklets is more effective than CD-based training method leading to improved quality of life.
Conclusion
Training can promote awareness and, thereby, enhance quality of life. Therefore it is recommended the use of patient education methods. This can play a major role in improving the patients’ quality of life and increasing life expectancy.
