The Relationship between Sleep Disorders and Quality of Life in Elderly Patients after Open Heart Surgery in Shahid Madani Hospital of Tabriz 1394

Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Prevalence of sleep disorders in patients after heart surgery prompted us to carry out a study with the aim of investigating sleep disorders in elderly patients after open heart surgery in Shahid Madani hospital of Tabriz. Materials and methods: This research was a cross-sectional descriptive-correlation study that was randomly conducted on 300 elderly patients undergoing heart surgery. The tools of data collection used in this research included the form of demographic characteristics collection, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for assessing the quality of nighttime sleep, Epworth Sleepiness Scale for assessing daytime sleepiness and the questionnaire of Morin Insomnia Severity Index. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software and statistics of Pearson`s frequent measurements and correlation (Pearson`s Chi Square Test). Findings: The findings of this study showed that the patient`s sleep quality worsened by lapse of time after surgery. After a lapse of 6 weeks from surgery, the patient’s insomnia severity was increased but after that, it has almost had a constant trend. The severity of patient`s sleepiness was also increased but after that, it almost had a constant trend. Discussion and conclusion: The results of this research indicates the necessity of health planning for the patients undergoing heart surgery that is fulfilled through clinical manager`s support for implementing of continuing education programs and providing facilities for clients in the training unit towards the high quality of sleep and the elimination of sleep disorders.
