چکیده
Background: Clinical studies about health benefits of lentil sprouts have not ever been done heretofore. Glycemic index has an important role in diabetes management. In this study the effects of lentil sprouts consumption on lipid profile, OX-LDL, glycemic indexes and anthropometric measurements of overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes were investigated. Methods and materials: This singke-blind fandomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on thirty-eight diabetic patients (males & females ageded 30-65 years). The participants were randomly allocated in two groups (intervention and control group) with matched subjects in each block based on age, sex and body mass index. Questionnar about general characteristics was completed for each subject. Weight and height of patients were measured and blood samples collected for biochemical assessments at baseline. Intervention group patients were supposed to eat 60 g lentil sprouts daily. Control group patients continued their usual diet. The same drug treatments were considered for all individuals during 8 weeks of study period. All measurements were done again at the end of study. Lentil sprouts preparation The lentil seeds were placed in water for 30 hours. The seeds were placed on a wet cotton tissue. After 24 hours. Lentil sprouts were packed and sent to patients. The experimental data were analyzed by statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS software, version16; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Data were analysed by paired-t-test, independent t test, analysis of covariance. The percent VIIchange for each variable was also calculated by. Also, p-value<0.05 was considered as statisticaly significant. Results: No significant differences between the two groups were observed for mean age, duration of diabetes, weight, BMI, WC, WHR, blood lowering pressure drugs; nor were there any significant differences between the pretreatment serum values of HbA1c, insulin concentration, FBS, HOMA, QUICKI, lipid profile and ox-LDL between the two groups at baseline. TG, OXLDL, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and FBS decreased in the lentil sprouts group compared to baseline, but in the control group no significant changes were seen 8 weeks after intervention. HDL-C, LDL-C and QUICKI increased in the lentil sprots group compared to baseline, but in control group no significant change occurred 8 weeks after intervention. Conclusion: The results suggested that lentil sprouts consumption can have favorable effects on anthropometric lipid profiles, measurements and glycemic indexcs in overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes.
