Abstract
Introduction and purpose: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is performed to restore life after clinical death. Many factors contribute to the outcome and success in CPR, one of the most important is the attitude toward initiating CPR. Considering that the attitude of each job as a result of it has definite effect, therefore the aim of this study was to determine the attitude of nurses toward initiating CPR and effective factors in success of CPR in hospitals of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences; 2017. Materials and method: This was a descriptive – analytic study in which 450 nurses were selected by quota sampling from educational hospitals of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected by a 3 part questionnaire that the first part includes demographic characteristics (13 items), the second part related to the attitude of nurses toward initiating CPR (15 items) and the third part related to the attitude of nurses about the effective factors in success of CPR (25 items). To determine the validity was used from content validity and to determine the reliability used from Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed by statistical tests such as mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage using SPSS 21 software. Results: The results showed that the mean age of study participants was 31 years; 92/2% were female, 67/1% were married and their work experience was 9 years. 94/7% of the participants had a basic life support training and 85/9% of them had a advanced life support training. The results showed that the most positive attitude of nurses toward initiating CPR were related to statement “I am committed to performing CPR and I am eager to do it” and “The training courses have a great influence on the decision for initiating CPR”. However, the most negative attitude of nurses towards initiating CPR were related to statements “The fear of further injury to the patient and the stressfull of CPR process” and “The lack of confidence to initiate CPR”. Nurses considered that effective factors in the success of CPR are “The place of cardiac arrest”, “The presence of skilled and experienced members in the CPR team”, “Not ready CPR equipment” and “ Applying expert and expert knowledge in teaching for CPR”. Conclusions: The main factors that affects the attitude of nurses for initiating CPR is the fear of further injury to the patients and stressfull of CPR process and the lack of confidence to initiate CPR, despite this, our study showed that the attitude of nurses toward initiating of CPR is positive. More attention to training and quality of training workshops is recommended to increase nurses’ self esteem and reduce fear and stress.
