The view of traditional medicine about oral health and new findings about it: a systematic review
Abstract
Introduction: Diseases and oral lesions are one of the most important problems of human societies, which in addition to imposing excessive health costs, cause serious problems for the community. In recent years, attention to traditional medicine, known as a source of inspiration for human health, has played an important role in the introduction of various methods of preventing or treating a variety of diseases. The present study was designed to evaluate the findings and viewpoint of traditional medicine on oral health.
Materials and methods: In this systematic review according to selected keywords, Web of Science ,Pubmed, Scopus, Embase, Google scholar, Proquest databases were used to search for English studies,and Google scholar, Sid and Magiran, and Daneshgostar barekat databases were used to search for Persian studies. the articles which, had the initial conditions for entering the study, were evaluated for the full text. Screening was done by two specialist. The obtained studies were critically evaluated and poor quality studies were excluded.
Results : After searching the databases, 866 articles were obtained. After studying the title and abstract of the articles, applying the criteria ,full text of 28 articles were prepared and 10 articles were selected. The results of the studies were categorized into four groups : symptoms of dental eruption, periodental disease , bruxism and tooth pain.
Conclusion: Traditional medicine can have a positive effect on oral health. The views of Iranian and Muslim scholars on dentistry have been indicative of their approach to observation and examination and the use of empirical methods in preventing and treating patients.
