Study of the present state use of pharmaceutical products by elderly people
Abstract
Background: Elderly people often take several medications at the same time, so taking medications should be with caution. As the age increases, the side effects of the drug increase. This is related to the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug, both of which are age-dependent and increase the drug's sensitivity to the patients.
Objective: The aim of this study was to help patients, especially the elderlies, to improve their treatment and prevent side effects, due to wrong use of drugs.
Method: This is a cross-sectional study that is carried out using a questionnaire that has been validated at the outset. A questionnaire containing demographics of patients and containing questions about the history of the disease, daily use of medicines, including OTC drugs, which is conducted on 150 patients selected from Tabriz pharmasies.
Results: The results showed that approximately 95% of the subjects were not aware of the interactions between their medications and the interactions of food intake, and about half of the patients did not study drug bruchures on how their drugs should be used. The result discussed according to the Chi-square Two and Fischer's exact tests. Borscheres study had no relation to the age of the participants.
Conclusion: The plan is definitely beneficial for the elderlies, which simultaneously use several medications. It can be used to train patient and insist advising pharmacists , the media and doctors to make more attention in etplaining the importants of the matter to the patient to reduce the incidence of advers drug intractions in elderlies.
