evaluating the cognitive subtypes involvement in Alzheimer’s disease patients
Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the cognitive function of Tabriz Alzheimer’s patients with Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), in order to better understanding the role of factors such as age, gender, and education level of people, on the results of the test.
Method and Material:
Among all patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease ,demographic data including age, sex, education level and duration of the disease were recorded in the questionnaire. All patients received the MMSE, and the results were calculated and recorded for every six items, as well as the overall score obtained from the test.
Results:
In this study, 100 patients with Alzheimer's disease were included: 73% had a mild
Alzheimer's disease, 25% had moderate, and 2% had severe disease. In overall assessment of Alzheimer's effect on patients' function, the recall field was disturbed
more than other areas. In comparing the mean scores, the scores of men in the areas of orientation, attention and calculation, language, and the overall score of the test was more than women. In evaluation the level of education on MMSE results, in the language item and the overall score of the test showed a significant difference between the groups. There was an inverse relationship between female gender and the patients'
function in the items of orientation, attention and calculation, language and the overall score of the test. There was a reverse relationship between aging and patients’ performance in recall and language items and the overall score of the test.
