The Needs and its Relationship with Burnout in Family Caregivers of Patients with Cancer in Tabriz Imam Reza Hospital, 2017
Abstract
Objective: The complex process of taking care of patients with cancer can affect various aspects of the needs and health of their family caregivers. The present study aims to determine the needs of the family caregivers of patients with cancer and its relationship with burnout
Methods: The present descriptive study recruited 200 family caregivers of patients with cancer visiting atabriz imam reza hospital. Sampling was carried out through the convenience method. Data were collected using Shin’s Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool in seven domains ana Pines burnout questionnaire in three domains. Data were analyzed in SPSS-23 using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, and ANOVA. In all of the statistical analyses, α=5% was considered as the level of statistical significance.
Results: The mean (±standard deviation) of the total scores of the unmet needs of the family caregivers was 81.73 (±16.82), with a possible range of 0-123. The mean scores were higher in the information, healthcare staff (physicians and nurses), and health and psychological problems domains as compared to the other domains. The mean (±standard deviation) of the total scores of the burnout in family caregivers was 83.26 (±18.61), with a possible range of 7-147. The mean scores were higher in the emotional burnout. The pearson test showed t showed a significant relationship between the needs of family caregivers and burnout (P< 0.05)
Conclusions: The result of study showed that unmet needs and burnout in family caregivers of patients with cancer were in high severity, when unmet needs increasing in family caregivers, burnout was elevated. So care team should pay special attention to family caregivers of patients with cancer. By assessing the needs and applying proper strategies and interventions caused to meet their major needs and reduced the care burden and its subsequent consequences such as burnout.
