Efficacy of Text Message and Face-to-Face Education Programs on the Improvement of Knowledge and Quality of Life among Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Introduction: Chronic renal diseases as one of the most common disease reduce patients’ quality of life; Patients need education for improving their living conditions and quality of life. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of text message and face to face education programs on knowledge and quality of life among hemodialysis patients.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial,60hemodialysis patients were selected using convenience sampling and randomly were allocated into two intervention and one control groups (n=20).The intervention groups received text message and face to face education programs. The Chronic Hemodialysis Knowledge Survey and Kidney Disease Quality of Life questionnaires were used to collect data regarding the patients’ knowledge and quality of life. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.
Findings: The mean age of participants was 41.65 (SD=10.67). After the interventions, knowledge in the text massage and face to face education programs’ groups were significantly higher than the control group (p< 0.001). However, the quality of life had no-statistically significant differences among the groups (p=0.58)after the intervention. But it increased inter face to face group significantly (p=0.02).
Conclusion: Text message and face to face education programs improved knowledge among hemodialysis patients. However, the effectiveness of these methods on patients’ quality of life need further evaluation in in different cultures for longer times.
