Attitude and the Use of Complementary Medicine among Medical Sciences Students and its Relationship with the Health-Promoting Lifestyle,1394

Abstract: Background: Complementary medicine can affect individuals’ approaches toward practical values related to the lifestyle and therefore, improve the health of individuals and the society. This study aimed to assess the use of complementary medicine by medical sciences students and identify its relationship with the health promoting lifestyle. Methods: This cross-sectional-correlational study was conducted with 300 medical sciences students in an urban area of Iran in 2016. Data was collected using the use of complementary medicine and health promoting lifestyle’s questionnaire and the health promoting lifestyle profiles questionnaire. Findings: The study participants were the most familiar with the methods of herbal therapy, cupping and hydrotherapy. Also, they had least amount of knowledge about energy therapy, aromatherapy and homeopathy. The lifestyle of the students in the domains of self-actualization, interpersonal support nutrition was in the best condition. Conversely, the domains of accountability, stress management and physical activity were in the worst conditions. A statistically significant relationship between the application of acupuncture, music therapy and hydrotherapy, and the health-promoting lifestyle. Conclusion: Policymaking and planning on the part of the custodians of medical education should be considered for promoting accountability, physical activity and stress management. Given the positive role of television, the media for improving the lifestyle should be highlighted.
