S100B protein value in predicting brain death after head trauma

Background: Protein S100B is a biomarker that reflects brain injury after trauma. In traumatic brain injury definite prediction of outcome of the patients is an important goal. In this regard, our study focuses on the S100B protein value in predicting brain death after head trauma.Methods: Seventy-two patients with a mean age of 40 ط¢آ±17.72 years (range, 5 to 80y; 50 male and 22 female) with severe head trauma [Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)?8] were recruited in this cross-sectional study. For all patients, the GCS score was evaluated, computed tomography scan was performed, and a single 5mL blood sample was obtained from each patient at 3 time points (on admission, 48 h later, and a week later or after brain death) to determine the level of S100B protein.Results: The primary and last GCS of patients had a predictive value in determining brain death (P <0.05). In addition, there was a significant correlation between GCS and level of S100B protein, as well as between computed tomography scan findings and S100B protein only after 48 hours after trauma.Conclusions: The level of S100B protein 48 hours after trauma was a good predictor of brain death and can be used as a marker to predict brain death on the basis of the results of this study.
