Herbal Oil Supplement with Hot-Nature Diet for Multiple Sclerosis
Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS), which leads to demyelization and results in physical disability, is the most chronic and inflammatory disorder. Because of limited efficacy and adverse side effects of currently available treatments, identifying novel therapeutic and protective agents is important. For many years, it has been suspected that the risk of developing MS might be associated with increased dietary intake of saturated fatty acids and an imbalance between unsaturated and saturated fatty acids, as well as consumption of Cold-nature foods, and it is unknown whether diets with a high dietary total antioxidant capacity can modify oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation, or liver dysfunction, all of which are risk factors for MS disease. Hempseed and evening primrose oils with Hot-nature diet can have beneficial effects in improving clinical symptoms and signs in patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), findings which were confirmed by activity of liver enzymes in patients with RRMS, inflammatory factors, and regulation of surface-membrane enzymes such as delta-6-desaturase, secretory phospholipase A2, and improvement in the erythrocyte membrane fatty acid composition. These findings could be an indication of restored plasma stores, and a reflection of disease severity reduction. é 2017 Elsevier Inc.
