The survey of meconium stained neonates
Abstract
The aim of this study is the investigation of frequency and outcomes of meconium stained neonates. This case control study was performed in 139 meconium stained and the 134 non-meconial ones in 1999. The rate of meconium staining was 15.3%. Post term pregnancy, oligohydramnios and nuchal cord showed meaningful relation with meconium passage. In neonates respiratory distress was 25.1%, seizures 4.4%, meconium aspiration syndrome 2.94% and mortality rate was 4.2%. More neonatal morbidity was noted in cesarean section born neonates than vaginal delivered ones. It is recommended to terminate the pregnancy before 42 weeks and it is advised to limit the cesarean section to thick or particulate meconiums.
