Over the past two of decades, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted significant attention for a wide range of biomedical applications. For the successful use of IONPs in nano-biotechnology, surface coating and specific functionalization is critical. Many types of materials can be used in the surface coating of IONPs for nano-bio applications, including organic compounds and inorganic materials. This review focuses on recent developments and various strategies for surface coating of IONPs. In addition, the different materials used for the functionalization of IONPs are classified and discussed in detail. The design of IONPs with multifunctional coatings for bio-applications is an area of considerable interest. Surface functionalization of IONPs allows them to attach to various biomolecules, making them a promising candidate for bio-applications. [GRAPHICS]
