Abstract
Introduction Urinary tract infection is the presence of microbial pathogens within the urinary tract and is also prevelant. In recent years, antibiotic resistance has become a major problem in many countries. Due to the increasing occurrence of drug resistance, studies on the determination of the resistance pattern in different geographical locations and different periods of times seem necessary.regarding the increasing resistance of bacteria, such as E.coli to antibiotics and differences based on the geographic area among these strains and duo to recommendations of experimental treatment, detection of resistance pattern of these bacteria in Tabriz is important. Aim Considering the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and the differences between these strains based on geography, as well as recommendations for empiric treatment, identifying the susceptibility of the bacteria seems necessary in Tabriz.Materials and methods During this retrospective study, documents of UTI patients, referred to Behbood Hospital, were studied from April 2011 until the end of March 2014.Result In this study, documents of urine culture of 21329 patients who were referred to Behbood Hospital between the years 2011- 2014 were studied in terms of the pathogens responsible for UTI and evaluation of antibiotic sensitivity and resistance patterns. Results suggest that the greatest sensitivity of E.coli is to Ciprofloxacin (72.4%), Nitrofurantoin (60.3%) and Gentamicin (46%) and the greatest resistance is to Cotrimoxazole (49.3%) respectively.Discussion and conclusionIn this study, due to the high sensitivity of most microorganisms to Ciprofloxacin, Nitrofurantoin, and Gentamicin; these drugs are suggested for the empirical treatment of UTI and Nitrofurantoin that has been considered as one of the most effective drugs against urinary tract infections was recorded efficient in nearly half of the cases. Keywords UTI, antibiotic resistance, Behboud Hospital, Tabriz
