Frequency of Periapical Radiolucency in CBCT Images Taken in Dental School of Tabriz from Year 2010 to 2013
Abstract
Apical periodontitis is a consequence of the pulp necrosis caused by micro-organisms within the root canal system. CBCT imaging technique seems to detect these lesions with more accuracy compared to the conventional imaging modalities. The present study assessed the incidence of periapical periodontitis lesions in the CBCT images obtained from the patients referred to Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology in Tabriz Dental School during 2010-2013. Materials and Methods In this descriptive cross-sectional trial, CBCT images of 151 patients (84 females; 67 males with the mean age of 43 years old) referring to this center were analyzed. PatientsE age and gender, the lesionsE location, the involved tooth type and the condition of the involved tooth were recorded. The incidence of the recorded apical periodontitis lesions were calculated and statistically analyzed by means of chi-square test regarding the mentioned variables. Results AP was seen in 123 patients (81.5%). Significant differences were observed regarding AP incidence in patientsE different age groups (p<0.011); so that; of total 428 AP lesions, 73 (17.1%) were noted in 30 years old patients, 132 (30.8%) for 31-40 years old group, 111 (25.9%) for 41-50 years old patients and 112 (26.2%) were noted in 51 years old patients. There is no significant differences in incidence of AP in males and females. The most lesions were noted in the right side of mandible (28.3%); in the 6 tooth number (19.39%); and maxilla was more affected than mandible (46.5% vs. 53.5%). The involved teeth showed adequate root canal treatment in 23.36% and in 39.73% of the lesions; the involved tooth showed inadequate root canal treatment. Conclusion The incidence of periapical radiolucency was high in the studied populations with the increased rates in the older patients and in the teeth with more complex anatomy
