The effect of verbal explanation before the surgery impacted third molar teeth on stress of patients
Abstract
The lack of knowledge of surgical problems in dentistry by people causes stress, anxiety and misconceptions of complications during and after surgery of impacted wisdom teeth including pain, swelling and limited movement of the jaw. And these factors sometimes result in avoiding wisdom tooth surgery by patients, which causes irreversible complications. The main aim of this project is to examine the effectiveness of verbal explanations before wisdom tooth surgeries in decreases in patientsE stress. Procedure The study is a before and after controlled clinical trial intervention design performed on patients applying wisdom tooth surgery in the Faculty of Dentistry in Tabriz University. In both control and experimental groups, 30 patients were placed, which were consistent in terms of average age, sex frequency and education. Before surgery, the experimental group received verbal explanations related to wisdom tooth, eruption time, impaction rate, surgical stages and possible complications from their dentist. Findings The results showed that before surgery, average stress based on the VAS (Visual Analog Scale) in the control group of 5.91 was significantly higher than that in the experimental group of 4.222. Also, after surgery, the control group of 5.61 was significantly higher than the experimental group of 3.51. Also, before and after surgery, stress variations (decreased stress) in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. Conclusions Verbal explanations before impacted wisdom tooth surgeries are effective to decrease patient stress. .
