Abstract
Oral diseases are major health problems with dental caries and periodontal diseases among the most important preventable global infectious diseases. Given the incidence of oral disease, increased resistance by bacteria to antibiotics, adverse affects of some antibacterial agents currently used in dentistry and financial considerations in developing countries, there is a need for alternative prevention and treatment options that are safe, effective and economical.thus in this research red clover extract used,to see how effective is it. Methods: First 2.7 kg was pulverized in an electric grinder. Powder so obtained was stored in a dessicator. 500 g plant powder was macerated with 95% methyl alcohol (MeOH) in a round bottom flask at room temperature for about 24 hour. The extract was evaporated to dryness and finally freeze dried at -50 C. After extrct taking ,these 4 extracts(25%, 50% ,75% ,100%) added to cultured Streptococcus Mutans bacteria in Mueller-Hinton agar plates and the results gathered. Results: Phytochemichal Analysis of red clover showed the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Saponins, Tannins. It showsed red clover is high in flavonoids. Mean average of the zone of inhibition of streptococcus mutans on red clover extract in 25% concentration is 22.25 and interpreted as intermediate. On the 50% concentration, the mean average is 28.97 and interpreted as susceptible. On the 75% concentration the mean average is 25.88 and interpreted as intermediate. On 100% concentration the mean average is 24.02 and interpreted as intermediate. It shows that 50% concentration of red clover is the most effective on inhibiting the bacteria than other concentrations. The computed p-value with significance level of p 0.05 interpreted as significant. It reveals that there is a significant difference between the four concentrations of red clover. Conclusion: There is a significant difference between the four concentrations of red clover in zone of inhibition of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria and It shows that 50% concentration of red clover is the most effective on inhibiting the bacteria than other concentrations.
