The effect of ferula persica plant methanol extraction on the level of Cox-2 in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) induced rat tongue
Abstract
More than 90% of oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, and one of the highest rates of cancer deaths, so approximately only half of the patients with oral cancer live longer than five years. The standard treatment for cancer involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy that each one has his complications and problems. Today, in the most countries, traditional medicine especially herbal medicine has been in the public interest, for prevention and treatment of diseases, because of better compatibility with the human body and the lack of adverse effects. In this study, for the first time in the world, we have investigated the effect of Ferula Persica plant methanol extraction on the level of Cox-2 in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) induced rat tongue in vivo. Materials & Methods: In this in vivo study, 75 rats from SD race and aged 2.5-3 months were selected randomly and divided into five groups. For induction of tongue carcinoma powder of 4-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO), was used three times a week for each rat. Also Ferula Persica extraction was given to each group to investigate the variability of blood Cox-2. Results: Mann-Whitney U test showed there is a significant difference in the mean of Cox-2 in groups (P=0.038). Comparison of Cox-2 means between group that only has received the carcinogenic drug and other groups indicated significant differences in the level of Cox-2. Cox-2 level in the group that only received the carcinogenic drug was low and in the group had received Ferula extraction at a concentration of 500 mg and carcinogenic drug was more than other groups. Conclusions: Extraction of Ferula Persica plant does not have reduction effect on level of blood Cox-2.
