Abstract
Head and neck (H&N) tumors are the widespread problems which are proposed by most of patients in different therapeutic units specially in professional cure centers for children. Increase in spreading benign and malignant tumors of head and neck in recent decades in childhood which has significant role in death and maim in contrast with times when these tumors were regarded as rare findings in fewer than 15- year-old children, made us to do this study. The aim of this study is to investigate the head and neck tumors frequency in under 12 years old children which can probed better and exact perspectives for on time cures and better subject for next studies. Materials and methods : This study was a descriptive-analytical and retrospective kind. All files exist in archive of pathology department of children hospital in Tabriz were investigated since beginning of 2001 to 2010 in a whole counting manner. All files of those under 12 years old children suffering from a H&N tumor were separated. In this study those files were investigated that according to final pathologic diagnosis they were suffering from special kind of H&N tumor (neoplasm). Required information were elicited from files and were provided in a form which was designed for this aim. This form involves personal information like age, sex and information related to tumor such as type of tumor, biological place and behavior (benign and malignant). Obtained information was analyzed by statistic SPSS.15 software using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, percentage) and Chi- square statistical test. Results: 1) In order to investigate statistical meaningful relation between two variables of: - type of tumor and patient's age (p= 0/144) - site of tumor and patient' age (p= 0/466) - original tissue of tumor and patient's age (p=0/376) - tumor behavior and patient's sex (p= 0/098) - original tissue of tumor and patient's sex (p= 0/857) we used Chi-square test. The results have shown that there were not meaningful relations between above parameteres. 2) In order to investigate statistical meaningful relation between two variables of: - tumor behavior and patient's age (p=0/007) - tumor behavior and original tissue of tumor (p=0/008) - tumor behavior and site of tumor (p=0/013) - prevalence of tumor and patient's sex (p=0/001) - site of tumor and patient's sex (p=0/018) - site of tumor and original tissue of tumor (p=0/001) - prevalence of tumor and site of tumor (p=0/001) we used Chi-square test. The results have shown that there were meaningful relations between above parameteres. Conclusion: According to findings of this study, the minimum age of patients was 2 days and maximum of their age was 12 years old. The average of patients' age was 5.2 3.9 . Most of them were male. The most widespread place of involvement was neck. Most of head and neck tumors were benign. The most prevalent benign tumor was Lymphangioma and the most prevalent malignant tumor was non- hodgkin Lymphoma. The most widespread benign tumor was observed mostly in children fewer than 2 years old but we cant mention special age for the most prevalent malignant tumor distribution. Also prevalence distribution of Lymphangioma was equal in both male and female patients.
