Radiographic evaluation of marginal adaptation, framework overhang and residual cement excess of dental implant supported fixed prostheses

Abstract
Introduction: Nowadays, application of dental implants has evolved dramatically. Marginal gap, overhang and cement remnants, cause the accumulation of plaque and lead to periodontal disease. This study aimed at radiographic evaluation of marginal adaptation, cement remnants and framework overhang of fixed implant supported prostheses. Materials and methods: In this cross - sectional study, parallel radiographs of 96 fixed implant supported prostheses fabricated at Tabriz dental Faculty were obtained. Radiographic images were scanned and imported into a computer and were evaluated for the marginal adaptation, presence of framework overhang and cement remnants with Digimizer software. Data were analyzed by the descriptive statistics (Frequency, Percentage, Meanstandard deviation) using SPSS 21 software . Results: The results revealed that the mean marginal gap of crown and multi-unit prostheses were 189.32203.96 micrometer and 355.53384.02 mocrometer respectively. Moreover 50% of crowns and 53.4% of multi-unit prostheses, had no marginal adaptation. 23% of the samples displayed no overhang, however mesial and distal overhangs were seen in 13.5% each and 50% on both sides. In total 77 % of the restorations exhibited framework overhang and none had any cement remnants. Conclusion: Most evaluated prostheses had framework overhang. Almost half of the prostheses had no marginal adaptation. No cement remnants were observed around the prosthesis
