Prevalence of periodontal disease and status in glaucoma patients(among two glaucoma center in Tehran 2008)
Abstract
glaucoma includes those maladies that will finally lead to optic neuropathy and loss of sight. Many risk factors for the glaucoma have been proposed including sex, race, age, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiac diseases. Regarding periodontal diseases are related to some of the aforementioned risk factors, there might be a relation between those entities. Methods and materials: among 200 glaucoma cases 93 were selected with the age range between 15 and 60, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. The periodontal status was studied according to the CPITN (community periodontal index of treatment need). The results were categorized according to the oral sites and age distribution upper and lower than 30 years old. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistical methods and also using Chi Square. Results: the data from this study showed that the healthy Periodontium CPITN=0(healthy) was more prevalent in indivisulas under 30 years old group. The percentage of healthy sextants decreased in the older individuals. The percentage of the sextants with CPITN=1(bleeding on probing) decreased by aging but the percentage of sextants with CPITN=2 (presence of calculus) CPITN=3 (probing depth between 3.5-5.5mm), CPITN=4 (probing depth more than 6mm) increased in the older patients. Conclusion: comparing the results of this study with the similar studies taken place in the general populations shows that there is no relationship between glaucoma and the periodontal disease.
