Prevalence of oral lichen planus in patients referred to oral medicine department of Tabriz dental faculty from 1385 to 1388
Abstract
Lichen planus is a chronic mucocutaneous disease that often involves skin and oral and genital mucous membrane. Clinical importance of this disease is that although OLP is a common disease, some types of that have potential to change to SCC. However high clinical importance of OLP, there is no obvious and exact prevalence for that in different populations. Aim: With prevalence evaluation of this disease, importance of other studies in ethiology, malignancy risk and preventive and treatment ways will be recognized. Methods and Materials: In this study, documents of all patients more than 12 years old that referred to Tabriz Dental Faculty from 2006 to 2009 to receive dental practice were collected and data was taken from OLP patients documents. Demographic informations of these patients and clinical features of lesion was written in special check list. Results: In this study prevalence of OLP was found 0.25 that the most common type and site for that was reticular OLP and buccal mucosa. Prevalence rate of lesion in males and females was almost same. Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence and malignant potential of OLP, it is essential that such individuals be carefully monitored by well experienced clinicians in long term.
