microbiological effects of application of Emdogain and Sustain release microspherical Minocycline adjunct to non-surgical therapy in peri-implant mucosal inflammation

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the microbial effects of mechanical debridement alone or in combination with the application of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) and sustained-release micro-spherical minocycline (MSM) in the treatment of peri-implant mucosal inflammation (PIMI). Methods: Subjects having at least one implant with PIMI have been selected, patients were divided into a control and two test groups. In all three groups, mechanical debridement (MD) were carried out. In MSM group, following the MD, MSM has been placed subgingivally around implants. In EMD group, after MD, EMD has been placed in the sulcus around implants. Sampling of peri-implant crevicular fluid for microbial analysis with real time PCR has been done at baseline, two weeks and three months after treatment. Results: In all groups, at 2 weeks and 3 months, the counts of P.gingivalis (P.g) were decreased significantly compared to the baseline. Levels of P.g were significantly reduced in MSM (P<0.0001) and EMD (P= 0.026) groups compared to the control group. Conclusions: The use of MSM and EMD can be used as an adjunctive treatment to management of PIMI and can cause reduction of P.g at least 3 months after treatment
