Abstract
Teeth and their supporting tissue’s damage is one of the most important problems among patients. Shortage in public education of the society, lack of awareness about dental care and observing the oral hygiene and also the lack of information about the importance of this system which plays an important role in the process of digestion, absorption, talking and beauty, leads to early tooth loss.Oral health requires the permanent care of teeth. Tooth extraction is always the last choice in dentistry. This study aims to determine the causes of tooth extraction and evaluation of oral health status in patients referring to the surgical ward of Tabriz dentistry School.Materials and Methods: This analytical descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 200 patients. General information of the patient, patients' oral health status, location and causes of tooth extraction after clinical examination were collected in a questionnaire. Data was recorded in SPSS software version 16 and was analyzed by using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage) and analysis (chi-square) and P <0.05 was considered significant.Findings: In this study, 200 patients were studied (66 men and 134 women). The most common causes of tooth extraction respectively were irreparable tooth caries (74.5%), misplaced teeth (29.5%), complete denture therapy (3.5%), latency (3%), economic considerations (3%), incurable periodontal disease (2%), and orthodontics (1.5%). Any tooth was not extracted due to the treatment before radiation therapy. Periodontal disease and complete dentures after caries were the most common cause in women and caries and latent tooth in men. Conclusion: Although World Health Organization aims to reduce tooth caries and its complications, tooth caries is still the main reason of tooth extraction despite age and sex. Tooth caries and misplaced tooth were the major cause of tooth extraction in the studied population.
