Evaluation of the effects of pistacia mutica extract on subgingival microorganisms
Abstract
Dental plaque has been recognized as a well documented etiologic factor for periodontal diseaseses. Hence the control of dental plaque has been respected as an issue of interest. In order to beat the shortcomings of mechnical plaque control the chemical ways have been taken into account. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Pistacia Mutica mouthrins on subgingival microorganisms. Methods:In a Single Centre, Cross-over, randomized Latin-square-controlled Clinical trial a total of 28 subject (13 male and 15 female aged between 32.8 5.2 Years) have been recruited. In comparison to Chlorhexidin (CHX) and placebo (PLC) the effects of Pistacia Mutica (PM) mouthwash on gram positive and gram negative subgingival microorganisms were evaluated . Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for PM, CHX and PLC were also detected. Results: Mean anaerobic bacteria count in Pistacia Mutica extract was 1.97*106 and in Chlorhexidine mouthwash was 1.13*106. Comparing the mean of anaerobic bacteria count in three types of mouthwashes revealed that the difference between PLC and PM was significant (P=0.006) and the difference between CHX and PM was significant too (P0.05). MIC of anaerobic bacteria in PM and CHX were 618.66 333.29 , 61 51.45 respectively and there was a significant difference between them (P<0.001). the MIC of anaerobic bacteria in Pistacia Mutica extract was 1845.58 1145.62 that was significantly stronger than Chloramphenicol 45.02 25.95(P<0.001). Conclusion: Mean aerobic bacteria count in Pistacia Mutica extract significantly lower than Chlorhexidine(P< 0.01) and placebo(P=0.006) and also Mean aerobic bacteria count in Pistacia Mutica extract significantly lower than base line but significantly difference was not found in anaerobic bacteria count between Pistacia Mutica extract with placebo and Chlorhexidine. Mean MIC of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in Pistacia Mutica extract was significantly higher than Chloramphenicol.
