Evaluation of Tabriz general physicians, dentist's and specialists knowledge about the bacterial endocardities prophylaxis in patients with cardiac disease receiving dental treatment in 2010

Abstract

Infective endocarditis is a rare disease resulted in mortality and morbidity 1n 10-80% of patients. Since many dental treatments can create the bacterial endocarditis, thereby antibiotic prophyaxis with appropriate treatment modalities by dentist is very important and necessary for prevention. Evaluation of Tabriz general physicians, dentist' s and dental specialists, knowledge about the bacterial endocardities prophylaxis in patients with cardiac disease receiving dental treatment in 2010. Method and Material : In this descriptive and cross sectional study, the population under consideration were the dentists, selected with simple sampling methods. The data was collected by questionnaires. For data analysis, t-test and spierman with the SPSS 13 program were used. Results:There were 108 male and 42 female dentists with the mean age of post gracuated 7.3 years. The mean score of knowledge was 13.9 and 13.2 for males and females respectively. There was no significant difference between them (P>0.05) . dentistry specialist knowledge was the most highest (16.4) and general physicians knowledge was the lowest (10.8). Conclusion: Knowledge of general physicians and dentists in Tabriz about the bacterial endocardities prophylaxis was not sufficient. So application of strategies to increase the knowledge of dentists regarding oral cancer is necessary.
