Evaluation of serum IL-8 in patients with oral lichen planus
Abstract
Background and aim: Lichen planus is an inflammatory lesion and premalignant condition with unknown etiology and definitive treatment. Recently, researchers show their interest in the role of Il-8 in progression or recession of the disease. Studies in this field are almost unprecedented and the aim of this study is to determine and compare the Il-8 serum level in the study group in Iranian population. Materials and Method: 28 patients suffering from lichen planus who visited the (diagnosis and oral disease) ward of Tabriz dental school and 28 healthy volunteers were chosen to participate in this study. Aftercollecting 5 cc of blood sample from each person, the Il-8 serum level was determined with ELIZA test and results were compared and statistically analyzed with SPSS 15, in control and study group. Results: The Il-8 mean serum level in study group was 34.93, whileit was 4.27 for control group. T-test showed a statistically significant difference in the Il-8 mean serum level (t=8.21, p<0.01). Conclusions: Our findings confirmed an elevated level of serum Il-8 in lichen planus, which may stand for its inflammatory role and upstream for pro-inflammatory cytokines
