Abstract
Different materials have been used to make dentures during different years. Teeth used in making dentures should have appropriate physical and mechanical features to meet the needs of masticatory functions including chewing, cutting, biting or squishing the food, meanwhile having desired beauty especially in anterior regions. The purpose which has been considered by all scholars was finding a material with features such as accurate compatibility with tissue with least change in volume and surface, tissue compatibility, ability to be polished appropriately, light weight, sufficient strength, beauty, easy use and sanitation. Denture and prosthesis teeth are available in different forms and colors and they are produced with materials such as porcelain baked in the vacuum, acrylic resins, modified resins and composite resins. Methodology: Research type of present study is cross sectional which was carried out during the years 2001 to 2011 based on Para-clinical studies carried out on all profiles of dentures of patients referred to prosthesis unit of faculty of dentistry in Tabriz university of medical sciences. Complete information of previous dentures were obtained and recorded from profiles in order to determine frequency type of previous denture, frequency type of previous denture tooth material, form frequency of previous denture, duration of previous denture used by the patient. Findings: Findings of present study indicated that from 471 studied patients, 151 (32.1%) used denture, among which 86 had complete denture and 65 had parasyl prostheses and from 86 patients 29 patients had experienced previous denture earlier. Studying material of previous denture tooth during 10 years indicated that frequency of using resin dentures with 48.3% is highly more than Chinese teeth with 13.8% of frequency. Teeth form investigations indicated that 13.8% of teeth form was cusped, 48.3% was without cusp and 37.9 % of teeth form was not determined. In this study investigation of duration of using denture per a day indicated that 24.1% of dentures were used daily and 6.9% was used rarely and 41.4% was used day and night. Conclusion: 10 years of studying profiles of those referred to faculty of dentistry of Tabriz for dentures and is evident for prevalent use of resin dentures among people. These indicate that the aim of dentist from choosing material type is adjustment between Biocompatibility, appropriate physical and mechanical features and obtaining more beauty if needed. So being aware of material features and their limitations are necessary for dentist to use them in a way that would have highest efficiency for the patient. This issue is highly emphasized, knowing that none of materials used in medicine and dentistry are not neutral.
