Evaluation of oral symptoms and complaints as a result of radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer refering to Tabriz Emam Reza Hospital in 2013
Abstract
Radiotherapy is most of the frequent treatment options of the head and neck cancers which have some unfavourable side effects beside its good effects on cancerous cells.The present study is conducted to evaluate the signs and the symptoms of patients with head and neck cancers undergoing radiotherapy. Methods and materials: In a descriptive analytic study ,we studied 89 patients with head and neck cancers refferring to Tabriz Imam Reza hospital. The oral symptoms were assessed and compared for all patients just after the radiotherapy and 3 months later.The data was analysed using t-test,willcoxon and croscal wallis with SPSS version 15 software. Findings:The most frequent permanent symptoms was mouth drying and its related complications (95/2%)(After treatment and After 3 month), and the most frequent temporary symptoms was mucositsi and its complications,The overall symptoms was different just after the radiotherapy and 3 months later(P<0.001) The symptoms was not significantl different before the treatmnet and after the treatment(P=0.06). Conclusion:The irradiation as 3000cg and more can cause permanent symptoms like dry mouth and its complications,temporary complications such as mucositis and its related complications can be developed with this dose of irradiation
