evaluation of demographic features in patients with geographic tongue referred to dentistry faculty of Tabriz university of medical sciences in 1387-88

Abstract

Geographic tongue is a common inflammatory disorder of the tongue that often recognize in the routine examination of oral mucosa. It`s prevalence varies in different population and some authors relate it to the race, sex and age. different condition has been reported in association with this lesion but there isn`t an agreement in this field. This investigation has been done to evaluate the frequency of the geographic tongue and the associated factors in one sample of Azarbayjan population (patients visiting Tabriz dentistry faculty ). Methods and Materials: This is a descriptive study that was done in oral medicine department of dental faculty of Tabriz university of medical science. A checklist was given to 75 patients that geographic tongue has been detected on them. The answers of these questions and the relation between different components such as the relation between different tongue lesions and age and sex was entered in the SPSS version 13 program and analyzed with t-test and chi-square test and ANOVA test. Results: The mean age of patients was 27+- 10.The prevalence of geographic tongue was %63 in females and %37 in males. Fissured tongue has been reported in %45 of patients. %9 of patient had Psoriasis. Conclusion: The prevalence of geographic tongue in this study was more frequent in females and association of geographic tongue and fissured tongue and psoriasis was significant.
