Demographic evaluation of jaw cysts in patients refered to pathology department of Tabriz dental faculty (2004-2009)

Abstract
Cyst, a pathological cavity that is covered with epithelium. Importance of cysts in the diagnosis is that some of them relapse after treatment and are in some other cysts and tumors may cause malignant changes are. Accurate diagnosis of lesions in the right and follow the appropriate treatment for them is necessary. Therefore, the goal of this review was to determine the prevalence of cysts in the oral and maxillofacial regions, as determined by age sex and location. Materials and Methods: This research reviewed 506 biopsies from department of oral pathology school of dentistry at the medical sciences university of Tabriz from 1383-1388(2004-2009). Results using spss 17 software were analyzed. Results: The results obtained revealed that 14% of biopsy lesion. were cysts of osseous structures, of which 88/7% odontogeniccyst. 7% Nonodontogenic cysts and 4/2% psuedocyst in origin. The most common lesions of the oral cavity were odontogenic cysts of which the subgroup of radicular cyst (which belong to the category of inflammatory odontogenic cysts) consisted of 41/3% radicular cysts occurred whit the higher incidence in males in their third decade of life and were found most commonly associated whit the upper jaw After that, who respectively okc 15/9% , Dlentigerous cyst and Infected odontogenic cyst 14/3% and coc 6/3% form. In this study it was discovered that Infecetd cyst consisted of 64/3% of Non-odontogenic and were found most commonly in the male predilection with a peak incidence in the Third decade. Pseudo cysts were few percent. Conclusion: Over all it can be stated that about 1/5 of all oral and maxillofacial lesions were cysts. The most common cysts were odontogenic cysts which due to their higher prevalence and various types, most be carefully examined at the histopathological level to diagnose and therefore administer definitive treatment.
