Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of calcium hydroxide on the push-out bond strength of MTA and CEM in simulated furcal area perforations. Methods & materials: Furcal perforations, measuring 1.3 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height, were produced in 64 human mandibular first molars. The teeth were divided into 4 groups of 16 MTA and CEM were used in groups 1-2 and 3-4, respectively, for perforation repair. In groups 1& 3 the Ca(OH)2 was placed in perforation area for one week before MTA and CEM placement; but not in groups 2&4. After one week the Ca(OH)2 was removed and the furcation perforations were repaired with MTA or CEM. After 7 days, Push-out test was carried out by using a Universal test machine. Data were analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Results: The maximum [13.081.8 MPa ] and minimum [8.030.98MPa] bond strength values were recorded in the MTA/Ca(OH)2 and CEM groups, respectively. There were significant differences in resistance to dislodgement between the MTA/Ca(OH)2 and other groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Placement of Ca(OH)2 before placement of MTA in furcation perforation improve the push out bond strength.
