Comparison of effectiveness of four- stage scaling with hand instruments and one-stage ultrasonic in patients with periodontitis
Abstract
Methods: thirty patients with moderate chronic periodontits participated in this randomized- controlled clinical trial divided into two groups. Patients in the control group received scaling with hand instruments, whereas patients in the test group received ultrasonic debridement. Clinical recording concerning probing index were performed at baseline, 2 months after baseline. Then results were analyzed with the descriptive statistics, Mann- whitneyU test and Wilcoxon sign test. Results: No differences in any of the investigated parameters were observed in the shallow and moderate pocket between the two groups. The mean value of BOP 27%- 60% decreased in the two group from after 2 months (P>0.05) and the mean value of PPD changed from 4.5 0.6 to 2- 3mm after 2 months (P>0.05). The results have shown that at deep sites (PPD> 5 mm) the one- stage scaling with Ultrasonic dives in comparison with the four- stage Hand instrument scaling has been more affective. The mean PPD changed in the test group from 5.8 0.4 to 3.1 1.1mm (P> 0.05) and in the control group from 5.4 0.3 to 4.2 1.5 mm (P>0.05). The mean value of BOP decreased in the test group from 95% at baseline to 20% after 2 months (P>0.05) and in the control group from 95% at baseline to 40% after 2 months (P>0.05). Conclusion: With both therapy methods yielded statistically significant PPD and BOP reductions after 2 month compared with baseline, especially in the shallow and moderate pocket. In shallow and moderate pocket no different were found in any of the investigated parameter (PPD and BOP) between the two groups. In the deep pocket (PPD5mm) the one- stage scaling with Ultrasonic dives in comparison with the four- stage Hand instrument scaling has been more affective
