Comparison histological and radiological findings after maxillary sinus floor augmentation with anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss) and Nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite (Ostim)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite (Ostim) in comparision with anorganic bovine bone(Bio-Oss) in sinus floor agmentation. Study design: In this randomized clinical trial, 10 patients aged 40-80 years were selected. All patients needed to sinus floor augmentation due to insufficient bone for simultanous implant placement.These patients received a panoramic radiography and Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) prior to surgical procedure. After lifting the sinus membrane, randomly, Ostim and Bio-Oss mixed with autogenous bone graft (20%) were placed at one of two side. Follow up CBCT was collected immediately after surgery and at the time implant placing. Biopsies were obtained from areas identifed 5 months after the surgery and before implant placement, and then were prepared for histological analysis. Statistical analysis was performed with using the nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test for comparing the histological and radiological parameters between two groups. A p value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Nine out of 10 patients were included in analyses as in one patient infection occurred at Ostim site. In both groups, all implants were placed with primary stability. In addition, from the point of view density, lateral window was tightly closed in the Ostim group compared with the Bio-Oss group. Histological findings revealed significant increase in percentages of new bone in Ostim groups (p=0.015). Furthermore, new bone density was greater in Ostim compared to Bio-Oss (p=0.038), however the difference in height increase after surgery did not reach to statistical significance (p=0.191). Conclusion: Despite the limitations of this trial, Ostim and Bio-Oss are useful bimaterials in sinus augmentation and Ostim seems to have even greater effect in new bone formation
