Association between BMI and dental caries among 6,9,12years old children in 2013 in Shabestar city

Abstract

Inapropriate nutrition is one of the main causes of dental decay in all age espacially in childhood and growth ages, nowadays the effect of obesity is proven on many diseases. It seems that obesity is related to dental decays in every age specially in childhood.the aim of this study is the evaluation of Association between BMI and dental caries among 6,9,12years old children in 2013 in Shabestar city. Methods And materials: In a cross sectional descriptive study in 2013 which is done on 240 children at the ages 6,9 and 12 years in a city of East Azarbayjan provinces the correlation between BMI and dmft/DMFT parameters were studied.after obtaining the consent from parents and managers of elementary schools, dmft/DMFT was calculated for children. BMI was also calculated for children. The correlation between dmft/DMFT and BMI was evaluated using proper analytic tests. Findings:the mean dmft in children with 6 ,9 and 12 years of old was 3.581.54,4.661.43 and 5.411.65 repectively, the correlation between dmft/DMST and BMI was meaningful upon the statistical analysis( P<0.001 and Pearsons R=0.655, P<0.001 and PearsonEs R+0.504, P<0.001 and PearsonEs R+0.254) Conclusion:Upon the findings of pesent study, we can conclude that the correlation between BMI and dmft/DMFT was statistically meaningful, the dmft/DMFT increases with BMI increase
