Assessment of low-level laser therapy(LLLT) effects on temporomandibular joint disorders, which are resistant to conventional treatments
Abstract
Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) comprise a number of signs and symptoms affecting the masticatory muscles, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), or both. Even though they have been subject of study for a long time, many controversies still remain regarding their etiology, diagnosis, and treatment. TMD etiology is currently known to be multifactorial, including the presence of parafunctional habits, trauma, stress, and emotional, systemic, hereditary, and occlusal factors. Nevertheless, none of these factors has demonstrated to overcome the others. Different treatment modalities were suggested for the management of temporomandibular joint disorders. But it may be no response to this modalities. So introducing a method that has minimal side effects is valuable . objectives of this study is investigation the effectivness of low E level laser therapy in the treatment of Temporomandibular disorders , which are resistant to conventional treatments. Material and Methods:This study was accomplished on 40 patients which were referred from maxillofacial clinics to pain clinic in Immam Raza educational E treatment and research center, All of these patients had experienced conventional therapies , but had found no improvement in signs and symptoms. At the beginning of study we took a testimonial and a history from patients. Then we educated the manner of assessment of pain with Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to patients and maximum mouth opening was measured to each patient with a centimeter. And completed the quality of life question form. The patients were delivered of LLLT for 12 sessions, at the region of temporomandibular joint , with an 890 nm and 12 J/ point device. At the end of treatment , (the last session of LLLT), the pain and maximum mouth opening were measured and the quality of life question form was completed to each patient , again. Results: After collecting the samples and completing the question forms, we analysed the data with SPSS software. Our findings involve the following . The outcomes of the VAS, highlighted that the low E level laser therapy was effective. There is an improvement in maximum mouth opening. Interferences with walking, sleeping, daily works , enjoying of life, communication and humor, has been decreased. conclusion: low- leser later therapy can be considered as an alternative physical modality in the management of tempormandibular joint pain, which is resistant to conventional treatments.
