Introduction: In recent years, single-shade composites have attracted attention due to facilitating the color selection. Since one use of composites is direct repair of ceramics, the present study was conducted to investigate the color matching ability of single-shade composites with different shades of lithium disilicate ceramics. Methods and Materials: In this experimental study, 66 specimens were examined in 6 groups. Lithium disilicate ceramic disks in 3 shades of A1, A2, and A3 were prepared with an empty interior space which then were filled with the single-shade composites (Essentia, GC) or multi-shade composite (Estellite SigmaQuick, Tokoyama) based on their group. 3 ceramic disks with similar dimensions but without an interior empty space were prepared as color references. The color of the specimens in the center of the disks was measured by spectrophotometry on black and white backgrounds, and the color differences with the reference samples were calculated. For statistical analysis, ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc tests were used. The significance level in all tests was considered less than 5%. Results: In both backgrounds, the type of composite, the color of the base ceramic, and their interaction effect had a significant effect on the color matching ability (p<0.001). On the black background, the single shade composite and on the white background, the multi shade composite had better color matching abilities (p<0.001). The single shade composite had a better color matching with A3 ceramic. Conclusion: The color matching ability differed according to the type of composite and the color of the base ceramic. The single shade composite performed better on the black background.en_US
